Southport Middle School Bands
The Performing Arts Department at Southport Middle School is home to nearly 1000 students. Currently, over 390 students participate in the band program including, 6th Grade Band, 7th Grade Band, and 8th Grade Band. Students also participate in Pep Band, Jazz Band, Solo and Ensemble, and many other small chamber ensembles that meet outside the school day. The SMS band program strives to create an environment that will help students develop a passion for music and create life-long stills to be productive members of society.
Mr. Shawn A. Humphries is in his first year at Perry Township Schools. Prior to coming to Southport Middle School he was the Director of Bands at New Palestine High School The New Palestine Band Program consistently received Gold Ratings at Concert Band and Jazz Band Festivals and is a 9 time – ISSMA Marching Band State Finalist, 2 time Mid-State Band Association Class AAA Champion, 19 time – IPA State Finalist, 6 time – Percussion WGI National Finalist, 13 time – IHSCGA State Finalist, 2 time – Guard WGI National Finalist, and 3 time IPA and IHSCGA State Champion.
Mr. Humphries holds a Bachelor’s degree from Ball State University where he majored in Music Education and minored in Symphonic Instruments. He was a student of Dr. George Wolfe and Adrian Re’. During his time at Ball State, Mr. Humphries was an active performer and member of numerous collegiate and professional level ensembles. His graduate work is in the Masters of Science and Music Technology program at Indiana University-Purdue University of Indianapolis.
Ms. Rejeana M. Overmyer has been a Band Director at Southport Middle School and Southport 6th Grade Academy for 7 years.
Rejeana M. Overmyer holds a Bachelor’s degree from Indiana State University where she majored in Music Education. During her time at Indiana State, she performed in various ensembles, was a 3-year drum major for the Marching Sycamore’s, a member of Kappa Kappa Psi, NAfME, and several other collegiate music education organizations. During her time at ISU she was also an instructor for the Sycamore Drum Major Clinic and worked in the ISU Band Office. She resides in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Mr. Brantley Heath has been marching and teaching for the past several years in the Tri-State area. After marching in the fall and winter ensembles at North Harrison High School, he went off to perform with the Cascades (2013), Pacific Crest (2014), and Oregon Crusaders (2015) Drum and Bugle Corps. He was also involved in the WGI Percussion activity, marching with Legacy Indoor Percussion (2014-2016).
His recent scholastic teaching accomplishments include IPA Scholastic Open Class 3rd Place with Zionsville Community High School (2018), ISSMA Open Class A 4th Place & BOA Semi-Finals appearance with Fishers High School (2018), WGI Scholastic A Class 11th Place with Perry Meridian High School, and WGI Independent Open Class 6th Place with Triple Crown.
His independent teaching experiences include serving as the Quad Tech for Tate’s Creek Indoor Ensemble (2017, 2018), the Seattle Cascades Drum & Bugle Corps (2017, 2018, 2019), Legacy Performing Arts Percussion Ensemble (2018), and Triple Crown (2019).
Brantley is currently living in the Indianapolis area teaching the percussionists at Southport Middle School and working with the percussion ensembles at Southport High School, Fishers High School, and Perry Meridian High School. He proudly endorses Vic Firth.
Awards and Recognitions
Southport Middle School bands participate consistently in the Indiana State School of Music concert band organizational contest and the Indiana Music Educators Association Festival. In 2019 the band received the prestigious ISSMA ALL-MUSIC Award for superior performance in all areas of music. Three concert bands and two jazz bands received GOLD Ratings as well.
